“And the LORD God said, it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”1, “And Adam gave names to all cattle and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field: but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh instead thereof: and the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”2
Wrong partner choice or an incompatible partner are serious risk factors in a Christian’s marriage. Marriage is God’s idea. God also ensures that you find His will in your marriage, as demonstrated in Adam’s life. Below is the narrative of God’s active participation in revealing His will for you in marriage.
After God had prepared Adam for handling responsibility in life and marriage (please refer to this topic under marriage and family life), “the LORD God said, it is not good that the man should be alone: I will make him a help meet for him.”3
“And Adam gave names to all cattle and all the fowl of the air; and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him.”4Youshouldn’t miss the narrative here: God told Adam that He would make him a help meet for him. Adam took God at His word. He believed in what God said. However, when naming animals, he carefully observed whether he would find anyone who looked like a human being suitable for him, but he found none. Put differently, in our contemporary time, when God told Adam that He would make a help meet suitable for him, Adam began to fast and pray, listen to preachers and teachers, attend seminars, retreats, and conferences, and so on, to hear messages on finding God’s will in marriage, and to find a wife for himself, but he found none. Adam could not find God’s will in marriage on his own because God was in the process of providing him with a partner who would be spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, occupationally, environmentally, and financially suitable, covering the eight dimensions of wholesomeness. Do not go ahead of God to find God’s will for yourself. It is all right to go ahead and do what contemporary Christians do, as mentioned above, but stop at opening your choice to anyone you may see.
“And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh instead thereof: and the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.”5 God brought his wife into proximity. When Adam saw someone who resembled him, his reaction was immediate! “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”6 Adam seemed to say, “I have been fasting and praying, and searching among those animals for one that would look like me. I finally got one, even as close to me as possible.
God has not changed. Do not go ahead; observe, and make your choice. God helped Adam find his wife, and He will surely help you today. God knows the thoughts that He thinks toward you, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.7And to you God says, “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eyes.”8Your responsibility is to “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart and lean not on thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil.”9
