The United States Preamble to the Declaration of Independence, on July 4, 1776, captures this timeless claim:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that their Creator endows them with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
The declaration itself does not explicitly name the Creator as the God of the Bible, nor does it quote a particular Biblical passage identifying Him. Thomas Jefferson was an American Founding Father and the third president of the United States. “He is best known as the main author of the Declaration of Independence.” He was a “complicated figure religiously. He believed strongly in God and in a moral order discoverable through reason.”
But from the Christian perspective, we understand that the “Creator” referenced in the Declaration of Independence echoes the Bible’s declaration:
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth…So God created man in His own image…male and female He created them…He made all things, and without Him was not anything made that was made…For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers, He created all things, and for Him. He existed before anything else, and He holds all creation together… by the word of His power” (Genesis 1:1,27: John 1:3; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:3)
The Declaration presents the truths that underpin our core values. God is the source and embodiment of absolute truth. Put differently, God is the unchanging, objective foundation of all reality, morality, and existence, independent of human opinion or cultural trends. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me… sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” (John 14:6,17:17). The “truths” we hold are God’s words, written in the Holy Bible, that we are all created in God’s image and possess inherent worth, not because of our looks, careers, achievements, or others’ opinions, but because God created us in His image with dignity and a divine purpose. We are made in God’s image to reflect His moral character traits—holiness, righteousness, love, peace, joy, patience, faith, goodness, gentleness, meekness, self-control, forgiveness, wisdom, understanding, knowledge, various skills, delegated power, and authority.
The same Creator-God creates every person with inherent dignity; therefore, my rights cannot depend on denying someone else’s humanity or dignity. I have dignity, and you have dignity; therefore, I have responsibilities toward you, and you have toward me. As the Bible teaches, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” (Leviticus19:18). And Jesus gave us a new commandment, “That ye love one another as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” (John 13:34).
Though the image of God reflected by humanity has been ruined by sin and rendered human beings depraved, guilty, and subject to the death penalty, in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior, God creates us a new creature with a new nature after His likeness in righteousness and true holiness when we repent and believe in Him. We redefine how we love, treat, and forgive others, and break down racial and ethnic barriers, knowing that we all came from the same Creator.
Knowing that “All men are created equal,” we believe there is no room for avoidable inequalities, underlying socioeconomic factors, and injustices that prevent males and females from being valued equally. And because we are “endowed by our Creator,” governments or systems do not give us rights to life, liberty, and flourishing. They are gifts from God. Our life is valuable. Our freedom is found in Christ Jesus, “the visible image of the invisible God,” who suffered, died, was buried, resurrected, ascended, and is coming back in supreme power and great glory to the world He created to defeat evil and reign forever and ever.
WLT believes that intentionally adopting, sustaining, and making daily healthy choices to live a healthy lifestyle, experience perfect soundness, lead a purpose-driven life, and establish a stable marriage and strong family relationship can be enhanced and facilitated by modeling life after the moral character traits of the Creator-God. Herein lie our core values, and Jesus Christ has commanded us to spread this good news to humanity, including young people in the District of Columbia, U.S.A., and around the world, for a profound change in the character, belief, behavior, and attitude of human beings to accomplish the seemingly impossible in one’s life.
