YOUNG ADULTS NOT IN EDUCATION OR EMPLOYMENT

WLT is dedicated to identifying and reconnecting disadvantaged young people who are young parents, young adults experiencing homelessness, not in education or employment, and young adults in prison or jail through programs that help them discover meaning, develop purpose, build a clear future for their lives, live fulfilled lives, and make an impact in the community.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics reports, “13% of Americans ages 18–24 were neither enrolled in school nor working in 2022. This translates to roughly 1 in 8 young adults.”

In the District of Columbia, “a single official DC estimate for all young adults ages 18–24 who are not in education is not routinely reported. However, DC agencies and youth-disconnection studies generally show rates that are like or slightly higher than the national average in some neighborhoods, particularly among economically disadvantaged youth. National research on “disconnected youth” (not in school and not working) is commonly used in DC planning purposes. (Federal Reserve).

The proportion of young adults ages 18 to 24 without a high school diploma or GED in the United States is about 11.4%, and those above 25 and older is 9.3%. (Census data)

In the District of Columbia, the proportion of young adults ages 18 to 24 without a high school diploma or GED is about 9.9%, and those 25 and older is 9.7%. (Census data)

“Meaning: about 1 in 9 U.S. young adults ages 18–24 had not completed high school/GED, compared with about 1 in 10 in D.C.” (U.S. Census Bureau ACS S1501 educational attainment table; NCES uses ACS for young adult education/work indicators.)
