YOUNG PARENTS

WLT is dedicated to identifying and reconnecting disadvantaged young people who are young parents, young adults experiencing homelessness, not in education or employment, and young adults in prison or jail through programs that help them discover meaning, develop purpose, build a clear future for their lives, live fulfilled lives, and make an impact in the community.

According to “KIDS COUNTS DataCenter (Annie E. Casey Foundation), American Community Survey 2019-2023 estimates…approximately 12% of young adults ages 18-24 are parents(resident parents living with their children) in the United States, and approximately 7-8% of young adults ages 18-24 who are parents in the District of Columbia… which is lower than the national average.” Put differently, in “United States: About 1 in 8 young adults aged 18-24 are parents… and in the District of Columbia: About 1 in 13 to 1 in 14 are parents.”

Early young adults, ages 18-25, are among WLT’s priority populations.  In 2024, according to DC Action, “DC’s population of young adults ages 18-24 also increased slightly, to 70,860 from 68,328” in 2022. Parenthood during this age group is associated with increased needs related to:

  • Economic stability and employment
  • Housing security
  • Childcare support
  • Relationship and family strengthening
  • Physical and mental health services
  • Parenting education and social support networks
